Environmentally Sustainable Food Farm and Irrigation Model

This renewable food project is simple, but its impact is tremendous. This project produces a viable protein source for the community in the form of chicken and fish and water for crop irrigation. See design here.

The project requires the construction of a 22,000 gallon tank filled with water and fish and topped with a grain-fed chicken run. The chicken droppings (from up to 300 chickens) are released into the tank by opening timber logs at the floor of the chicken run.

The tank is filled with fish, which live off of the grain-fed chicken droppings. Two outlets, one at the bottom of the tank and one above the floor are used for gravity-fed irrigation systems, watering the surrounding gardens. The bottom valve is only used when emptying or cleaning the tank and is kept closed for providing water for fish in this bottom level. All outlets have filters. The top of the tank is open to the air, but with a diamond wire mesh covering.

The chicken, fish, fruits, and vegetables feeds the community and the surplus can be sold at nearby markets. This project sustains itself and provides the following:

Water for crop irrigation
Protein in the form of fish, chicken and vegetables
Income for various community operations
